Skin feeling dry and cracked

What causes dry, cracked skin?

When the weather is cold, the air is drier, which can cause your skin to lose moisture.

Taking long, hot baths or showers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. Using harsh soaps and detergents can also dry out your skin and washing your hands or body too often can also dry out your skin.

As you age, your skin produces less oil, which can make it more prone to dryness and some medications, such as diuretics and antihistamines, can dry out your skin. Certain medical conditions and environmental factors can also cause dry skin.

What can I do for dry, cracked skin?

Take shorter, cooler baths or showers & be sure to exfoliate gently, as over-exfoliating can irritate your skin. Moisturize regularly - using the right moisturizer for your skin type. A humidifier can add moisture to the air, which can help to prevent your skin from drying out.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing that can rub against your skin and irritate it.

See a doctor: If your dry skin is severe or does not improve with home treatment, see a doctor. There may be an underlying medical condition that is causing your dry skin.
